Faith Comes by Hearing

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.” Matthew 24:14

While we were in Albuquerque we were advised to visit and take the tour of a para-church ministry called Faith Comes by Hearing which is headquartered there. Faith Comes by Hearing started off as a cassette tape ministry that produced audio Bibles and other Christian tapes in the 1970s by Jerry and Annette Jackson, who also traveled around the country in an RV!
Today Faith Comes By Hearing is committed to reaching the nations with the Word of God inaudio, offering the Bible in a format that will connect with the world’s 50% illiterate population. To accomplish this enormous task, the Lord has assembled a group of committed leaders and dedicated servants of His Word to develop into a reality the vision of bringing His church together and making disciples.
Currently, Faith Comes By Hearing offers 546 languages reaching over 5 billion people in 185 countries. Faith Comes By Hearing is rising to meet the biblical needs of a complex world through modern technology. MP3 BibleBibleSticks for all ages, and third-world culturally adapted playback units,Proclaimer, are just a taste of the technology that God is using to spread His Word throughout the world with Faith Comes By Hearing programs. And, the plans include offering this technology in every language or tongue…

We purchased the Kid’s Bible Stick, which contains the New Testament for kids and songs on the memory stick. Our kids have already listened to quite a bit of it. Chase was listening the other day and said “Hey Mom, I heard Jesus!”

The Military BibleStick is a digital audio player that is pre-loaded with a dramatized recording of the entire New Testament. Chaplains from every branch of the military are flooding Faith Comes By Hearing with requests. Over 107,000 of these Audio Bibles are now in the field. Over 700 chaplains use Military BibleSticks in pre-deployment briefings, counseling sessions, Bible studies, weekly chapels and other spiritual services.

About 3.5 inches long and less than an inch thick, these pocket-sized Audio Bibles are field-friendly with a low-key design which reduces visibility for use in low-light situations.

They also offer free audio Bible downloads in many languages and have a free app for iphone and other phones called Bible.is They have any incredible way to track how many audio Bibles have been downloaded or streamed live using this app and the website. We got to see the huge live map of audio Bibles being listened to across the world, even in the middle of the ocean (aboard Navy ships). Our brother-in-law Joe’s brother Jeremiah works for this top notch organization. Be sure to check them out and consider how you or your church could partner with them.

It is set to three songs, On the Open Road sung by Goofy (BTW my kids are nothing like Maxie!), American Kid sung by Go Fish and I’ve Been Everywhere sung by a Johnny Cash wannabe.  I hope you enjoy it and keep following our families adventures!!

Great times at Wichita Kidology to Go

Sunday, November 21st, 2010

Yesterday we held our second Kidology to Go in the great city of Wichita, Kansas and Asbury Methodist Church. Children’s Pastor Jerred Haydock was our host and several other churches from the area sent their staff and volunteers to be part of this fun and encouraging day. We always end each session with a time of questions, answers and idea swapping. It never fails that I get some great ideas through this idea swap meet. Yesterday as we were sharing methods of classroom and behavior management, one of the ladies in the group had a great concept she shared with us. She said she often says “I challenge you to …..” when dealing with a behavior issue at her church. What a great concept!

The whole day was so fun. We loved getting to meet new friends who shared their appreciation for coming and sharing some insights God has shown us over the years of working with kids. Jerred is a great children’s pastor who organized this event with great detail. It is obvious he cares about the kids and families in his church as he takes time on a busy Sunday morning to interact with kids, calling them by name and stopping to address needs that arise. He was also a great host for us and worked hard to make sure we were taken care of, which was very appreciated.

We look forward to working with more churches in the new year, and we are actively looking for host churches in New Mexico, Arizona and Southern California in the first three months of 2011. Give me (Marty) a call at 847-707-7552 to set up a date!

Thoughts from the Road

Friday, October 1st, 2010

We have officially hit the road full-time, living in our RV and roaming around the US (so far we have only made it to Missouri). It is quite an amazing feeling, seeing a dream that has been in your mind for so long become a reality. This particular dream has been a big giant step into the unknown for our family. We have left the comforts of a stationary home for a 300 square foot rocking home on wheels. Driving a 32 foot rig with a min-van in tow through traffic has been a real learning curve as well.

Brendan and his nature buddies

Through all the nerves and white knuckles and even the tears, we are very excited and have been awe struck as God has provided the means. We are blessed with our 32 foot rig, which we have dubbed Howard (started off as Home On Wheels and went from there.) Today as I was driving down interstate 44 I thought about what I loved so far about this transient lifestyle. Some of you may be wondering what is so great about this life. I came up with a few things for the wondering mind this afternoon.

I love that our family is together. In a house we too often go into different rooms and separate ways. We are sort of “forced” into learning how to live together in the tight space. I can already sense this has been good for us. My wife and I have a lot more time to talk sitting next to each other just riding down the street.

I love how we are closer to nature. Thursday we woke up to a beautiful fall morning in Mark Twain State Park. Our son Brendan loves nature and has already had his pockets full of acorns, buckeyes and little twigs. This particular morning he got his brother, David, to go out with him despite the cool air. Soon Brendan had both a snail and a caterpillar crawling all over him. Later in the same park we went for a hike and looked for animal tracks and all of us were so excited to actually find some in the soft mud.

I love the educational value of traveling all over. We stopped at the St. Louis Arch and went through the museum and our boys did the junior ranger program. Our 13 year old Blake has decided to help his brothers as we do these at National Parks across the nation. He commented to me that he learned more about the Arch than he thought was possible. Even Patsy and I commented on what we learned.

Finally I love the adventure. Yes we are a bit scared and bit apprehensive of how this thing is going to work out. But shouldn’t a life devoted to God have times of feeling a little nervous? I imagine Paul might have been nervous facing Kings and Emperors, that Hudson Taylor had butterflies in his stomach on his first boat trip to China and that Martin Luther lost some sleep over nailing the thesis to the church door. A life without risk isn’t really living.

Stay tuned as hopefully we will have the live cam up and running and will be holding Kidology to Go training sessions next month in Oklahoma and Kansas.

Kidology to Go in Wichita, KS

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

One of the exciting things about traveling around the continent is that I will be meeting up with people I haven’t seen in a super long time. Our third Kidology to Go will be just that!

Asbury Church

Asbury Church - Central Campus

On Saturday, November 20th Asbury Church in Wichita, Kansas will be hosting a Kidology to Go. Asbury has four campuses, and their Central Campus Children’s Pastor Jerred Haydock will spearhead this event for us. The event will also take place at their central campus at 2801 West 15th Street, Wichita, KS 67203. Pastor Jerred has a very active and exciting ministry at Asbury called Blast Kid’s Ministry, where their mission is To see every child grow up the same way Jesus did “in wisdom stature, and favor with God and man.”

Pastor Jerred

Asbury holds a special place for me because I once served as Children’s Pastor there a decade ago. Many of the people we knew at Asbury are still there serving and growing in Jesus, including their senior pastor Dennis Wallace and his wife Ladonna.  Wichita is a great city but has gone through a lot since 9/11 because it’s economy is closely tied to the airline industry. I look forward to coming back to this tremendous church and city to bring some training, inspiration and fun!! Register online if you live in Kansas or Oklahoma or even Texas!
